Be the change that you want to see

"Be the change that you want to see," is something a mentor always told me whenever I came across a road block in college. Today, our society is often changing and evolving around how the media views, feels, or tells somebody how they should look like. For example, most models in the fashion industry are over 5'8" in height and weigh under 120 pounds. Fashion magazines display these tall, skinny figures, and tell people that this is the definition of beautiful. This is a false perception, and over half of the United States population is over-weight. On the other hand, in the entertainment industry, rappers and singers are saying such words such as "I like my girls thick," or "bounce that butt, it's the roundest." These type of derogatory sayings make a lot of women think that "thick" or "fat" is the way to go. With this being said, The Celebration of Healthy Living event will dismiss these rumors and spark an immediate change in minority students on FAMUs campus, who are often persuaded by the media. This fictitious event will positively impact the FAMU Student Health Services by helping to get there message out to the public about how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle and cut down on the obesity rates among incoming freshman.

FAMU, is a historically black college and university, and has an obesity rate of 30%. African Americans are more prone to eat unhealthy and not work out. The Celebration of Healthy Living event will impact the FAMU community by letting these students know that "the time is now" to start living healthy. The Celebration of Healthy Living will let students know that what you see on television or here in rap songs is not the lifestyle they should try to portray. This event will hopefully change the mentally that being "thick," which is border-line fat, or looking "anorexic" is not healthy. This event will change students perceptions and provide them with hard core facts on healthy foods, exercise and dieting.

Many times, people think that if they look slim or a good size in the mirror, means they are perfectly healthy. This statement is not true. Just because you may not be over-weight physically, doesn't mean that you are healthy internally. The foods that you put into your body everyday has an impact on your future. The Celebration of Healthy Living event wants to let participants and other public's know that eating healthy is 80% of the goal towards losing weight, and the time is now to start living a healthy life. This event is geared to let participants know that you have to change old unhealthy eating habits and save yourself from serious health risks that are associated with unhealthy lifestyles. Through my career aspirations I plan to help motivate and encourage people to "be the change that you want to see." I plan on doing this by implementing planned programs of actions that will better serve the PR organization I will work for. I want to get the messages out to the public so they can have accurate information and make decisions based on true facts and ideas. I can make a positive impact in the world by speaking, writing and counseling people who may not have the tools necessary to do so.

  1. I think you have a clear perception of the role the media plays in our society. Our campus alone is the perfect place to see young people, especially young women, buying into the images that flood the media daily. I do hope most of all that those people who appear healthy will be motivated by your event to get themselves checked and make smarter choices.

  2. Very nice. I like your blog overall and I like where you were going with the format for this post. Somewhere along the lines I believe the photos just did not cooperate, which is fine nothing is perfect. Your visuals for this post are dead on. The contrasting images of beauty directly tie in to your post and drive the point home effectively. I would've wished to see a little more facts, but that's just me. One thing your post did accomplish was intrigue. At first I assumed it would be a little preachy and therefore mundane but it wasn't. It made me wonder why healthy living? Is this a passion of yours? If so, how would you transfer that passion to your event? I would love to see a manifestation of your personal mission in the event.

  3. WOW!!!!! The images you have posted with this blog grabbed me first, but you write beautifully as well; I just couldn't stop reading what you have to say. I definitely agree with everything you said about body image and how the media plays a big role in how we view ourselves. Another factor that impacts us is our friends and families. For instance, my family are very "gung-ho" healthy, be fit, #proSKINNY, etc etc. people. And, I have a lot of people in my family who are on the larger side; and I feel bad when they have to have other people's views attacking how they look, and their self-esteem. (I really love this topic--as you can see) Your event sounds amazing, and I can't wait to attend the real version of it.
